Title : Inquiring in additional languages
Description : Due to cultural and linguistic factors, English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners often struggle with the skills needed for the inquiry process, such as abstract thought and creativity, questioning skills and language skills. To better understand these challenges, I compared a History 30 E class (a course for students who speak English as an Additional Language, and who come from around the world) and a Geography 20F class (students with grade-level English skills, with students who are either native to Canada, or who have been here for a long time) as these students engaged in inquiry. Due to the nature of the courses, the projects themselves took very different forms, but insights into the inquiry process itself did emerge.
