MERN Forum # 52
Session: 3D
Author: Timothy Beyak & Justin Larrivee
Affiliation: Louis Riel School Division & University of Winnipeg
Title : Spaces of issue and issues of space
Description : This session will present learning places as a “third spaces” (Bhabha, 1994) where different realities intersect and catalysts (Edwards, 2008) give rise to spaces of transformative change, the co-construction of knowledge, and shaping of consciousness (Vygotsky, 1933; Berger & Luckmann, 1963). The session will address the opening of third spaces for re-imaging, re-envisioning, and hybridizing identities catalyzed by such initiatives as: the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Black Lives Matter, and growing LGBTTQ* movements. It will also present the stresses placed upon third spaces in relation to xenophobia, antisemitism, Islamophobia, and intolerance catalyzed within movements such as: Trumpism, Brexit, and the Alt-Right to explore how third spaces may open or close within the contexts of these shifting ideologies.
