Title : Who’s doing the thinking?
Description : Why don’t students see deeper connections in mathematics? Are the students doing the thinking or is the teacher doing the thinking for them? This quest began with changing the structure of lessons from teaching units to cycling through big ideas which led to a change in how each lesson is structured. Helping students to consolidate their knowledge evolved as a priority for the new structure. Students became the thinkers as they started to understand numbers. They were given the opportunity to make connections about what they already know and apply them to new concepts. Assessment evolved concurrently with the changes in structure. In this session, we reflect on how the MTIP process of inquiry, and having an inquiry mindset about teaching, influences teaching practice.
