Title : Language use and literacy development through culturally-relevant play-based pedagogies in early years classrooms
Description : Based on a collaborative study, in this presentation, we will discuss the significance of culturally-relevant play-based approaches to teaching and learning literacy in two elementary classrooms and one Head Start program in a Canadian rural community. Our findings suggest that imaginary play has the potential to provide a rich context for children’s language development and literacy education when teachers place emphasis on creating culturally-relevant pedagogies that build on students’ lifeworlds. Our study is part of a larger research Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) funded study that aims to address the need to close literacy achievement gaps between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children, and between rural and urban children in Canadian communities. This study was a reflective practitioner's research that provided opportunities for the researchers and the participant teachers to collaborate in all stages of the research process.
