Title : Mathematics teacher inquiry projects for social equity in Tanzania
Description : In the summer of 2015 I went to Tanzania to contribute to a capacity-development project in Dodoma, one of the poorest provinces in one of Africa’s poorest nations. The project, sponsored by the Canadian government through the University of Alberta, has as its central mandate the development of a more equitable school system through the reform of its school mathematics. At the core of my small contribution was supporting a group of mathematics teachers who were becoming leaders of tomorrow—and the core of their program was individual inquiry projects in mathematics education! I’ll share my experiences in Tanzania, and suggest some powerful lessons relevant to our social and educational goals in Manitoba.
