Title : Learning places as transformative spaces: An exploration of identity and citizenship through global issues inquiry
Description : This presentation describes learning places as transformative spaces through inquiry learning in the Grade 12 Global Issues: Citizenship and Sustainability course. It explores “third spaces” (Bhabha, 1994) of learning as places where different realities intersect and provide experiences that catalyze transformative change. It draws upon the interplay of the literacies of home, school, and community spaces with identity (Pahl & Rowsell, 2012), the connections between witness and testimony to experience and reality (Dutro, 2008), and narrative as interruption to the individual within their own space (Lewiston & Heffernan, 2008). The presentation aims for contemplation of identity as a product of lived and imagined experiences, democratic citizenship education for and as transformative change, and pedagogy that would have learners re-imagine, re-envision, and re-evaluate their own positions within spaces and contexts of self, community, nation, and world.
