Title : Classroom-based assessment in early and middle years
Description : The provincial Grade 3/4 and Middle Years assessments are classroom-based assessments of students’ learning in competencies in reading, numeracy and, at Grade 7, student engagement in school. Their main purpose is to help teachers identify and address student-specific learning issues relative to the competencies, and to keep parents informed. With a focus on Grade 3 numeracy, the session will present an example of how data available to schools can be analyzed (using Excel), and explore assessment strategies and how daily classroom work and routine tied to instruction can support the development of the competencies. This session is suited to a team of early years mathematics teachers and to those interested in or using data from the assessments.
