Author: Brian Rice
Affiliation: University of Winnipeg
Title : First encounters between indigenous peoples and newcomers from the east to central Canada
Description : In this session, Brian Rice will present an overview of his recently published book primarily intended for high school educators who teach Indigenous History and Culture. The information and perspectives shared help to develop an understanding of Indigenous origins and worldview. Primarily reflecting a North American context, reference is also made to Christopher Columbus and his voyages because from this early encounter with the Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, the beginnings of a global transformation would take place, that set the stage for the legal, political, and social relationships between Indigenous peoples and Europeans particularly related to the rights Indigenous peoples to their lands in the Americas. The session ends with an account of the formation of the Metis nation and encounters out west with First Nations during the signing of treaties.
