Title : Technical vocational and academic partnerships
Description : The Swan Valley School Division and the University College of the North have worked diligently and strategically to develop a highly successful model of Technical Vocational and Academic partnerships. Students and members of the Swan Valley Community and surrounding areas have the opportunity to achieve post-secondary training locally and begin that process while they are still in high school. Adult students in the area are also able to gain Level 1 apprenticeship Technical Vocational training as well as academic post-secondary courses. UCN and the SVSD have shared buildings and staff to make programming work. They have worked with the Northern Sector Council to bring additional opportunities to our youth and young adults. The model has promoted economic development and other new opportunities. The partnership is grounded on the principles of 21st Century Learning and has increased the capacity of all partners. The partners have worked along-side Department of Education and Training to provide new opportunities for youth and learning institutions. The partnership has used local industry to help align their programming with the needs of local industry. The partnership has evolved over the years but the end result is that each individual organization is stronger together than each of them working in isolation.
