Title : Seeing teaching for social justice as part of preparing students (and teachers) for living sustainably
Description : In this presentation we take the stance that teaching for social justice in K-12 schools can and should be embedded into the larger endeavor of preparing students for living sustainably. Because of the socialization impact of schooling, living sustainably needs to be a commitment by teachers as well. In this presentation we:
(a) conceptualize how we can see teaching for social justice as part of preparing students and teachers for living sustainably;
(b) draw on preliminary findings of a study to present cases of teaching for social justice seen in this larger framework within the Manitoba context; and
(c) provide concrete suggestions for how teachers can embed teaching for social justice into the larger framework of preparing students for living sustainably.
