Title : "Linking communities to enhance learning opportunities in science for both teachers and students in minority language schools"
Description : Two of the studies being done as part of the project CRÉAS (Centre de recherche sur l’enseignement et l’apprentissage des sciences) will be described. The project is a collaborative effort between the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine (DSFM), the Bureau de l'éducation française (BEF) of Education, Citizenship and Youth Manitoba, science and science education professors of the Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface (CUSB) as well as the francophone grade 9 science teachers. The project is of a five-year period. We are currently in the second year of the project. The first study that will be described concerns the development of teacher profiles to determine the needs of teachers working in a minority language context for the purposes of creating a relevant professional development strategy. In the first year of the study, the grade 9 francophone science teachers filled out surveys and participated in interviews targeted at revealing certain aspects of their teaching situation. These aspects were then analyzed in terms of the identification of risk and protective factors as well as a preliminary analysis of their teaching style in the teaching of scientific concepts. The second study explores the use of technological tools as a support or protective factor to maintain and enhance the professional development strategy. A review of the literature related to the use of technology to create teaching, learning and collaborative opportunities was started in the first year. Exploration of the possible tools to create a virtual, professional learning community is in progress.
