Title : "Rurality a potential advantage?
Description : This presentation explores a shift in thinking to Dynamic Systems Theory in which lived rural experience and living may actually provide an advantage for curricular re-orientation for both student and teacher. Curricular change always requires student and teacher re-orientation at many levels. The more fundamental the change the more profound the shift and the work to develop integrity through levels of curricular analysis. The shift to education for sustainable development (ESD) demands a fundamental change because the shift challenges the very way in which teachers and students relate to their surrounding world. This may be a challenge for current teachers in their practice. Yet, while rurality has disadvantaged children in educational achievement is it possible for ESD to potentially advantage rural students? Is it possible that the cyclical experiences of rural students provide an advantage to understanding concepts fundamental to ESD. Can teachers recognize and explore such potential?
