Title : Connecting research to policy and procedure: Safety and security
Text : In 2004-2005 the Brandon School Division experienced increasing numbers of incidents involving violence and drug-related suspensions in our senior high schools through suspension tracking data and student feedback. As a result, we undertook an in-depth review of policy and practice in place. The analysis of our data and in-depth research review resulted in the re-writing of several policies; amendments and additions to others; and the development of new policy. Brandon School Division developed these changes, with legal input and advice, and given the severity of the behaviors (assaultive/drug related), consulted with the Brandon Police Service. As well, students were consulted throughout the review/development process and were involved in the implementation of the policy changes. The successful implementation of these policies is enhanced by data collected over the period of 2004-2005 through 2006-2007. This presentation examines this data, references the policies and practices developed and implemented, and examines subsequent community partnerships that evolved which are currently collaborating to address the issues of safe and secure schools in Brandon.
