Title : Addressing Risk and Building Resilience Through Career Exploration
Text : This session will present findings from a research project that investigated that long term impact of a weekend career exploration program for a group of at-risk elementary school children. A mixed methods approach was utilized including pre and post measures of perception of ability, school motivation and self esteem, in addition to qualitative interviews with children, parents and teachers. Results suggest that career education appears to have a retentive influence on academic motivation and school engagement. Additionally, early exposure to meaningful career exploration activities may mitigate risk associated with the transition from elementary to middle school for inner-city students.
